HBC Statement of Faith

  • The Bible

The Bible is God’s inspired revelation to mankind, consisting of the 66 books written by human authors as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. It is complete, without error in the original writings, and the final authority for faith and life.

  • God

There is one God , Creator of all things, who exists eternally in three equally divine Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  • The Father

God the Father is perfectly and simultaneously merciful, loving, holy, righteous, just and true, limitless in knowledge, infinite in presence, and absolute in power. He has graciously purposed from eternity to redeem a people for Himself and to make all things new for His own glory.

  • The Son

The Son of God is eternally begotten of the Father. He took on flesh in the person of Jesus Christ, who was conceived through the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, and who remains forever fully God and fully man. He lived a sinless life, was crucified for the sins of the world, was physically raised from the dead on the third day, ascended into heaven, and now sits at the right hand of God the Father, from which He will one day return to judge the living and the dead.

  • The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates sinners, unites them to Christ by faith, and adopts them as heirs into the family of God. He indwells them, illuminates their understanding, causes them to grow in holiness, empowers them for service, and seals them until the day when they will be fully conformed to the image of Christ.

  • Mankind

God made mankind, both male and female, in His own image, beginning with the historical persons of Adam and Eve. Men and women are equal as persons with complementary roles and responsibilities. Marriage is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and sexual intimacy is to be enjoyed solely within this exclusive union.

  • Sin & Salvation

Adam and Eve were tempted by Satan and sinned by disobeying God. Now all people are sinners by nature and by choice, and apart from God's grace are spiritually dead, lost, and without hope. The just penalty for sin is death, separation from God, and eternity in hell.

Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross and died a substitutionary death as the perfect, all-sufficient sacrifice for sin. He was raised from the dead and ascended into heaven, where He intercedes as the high priest of His people. His atoning death and victorious resurrection are the only grounds for salvation.

God commands everyone to repent and believe the gospel. All who repent of their sin and place their faith in the person and work of Jesus Christ are declared righteous and will enjoy new life and reconciliation with God. This salvation in Christ is a free gift which is received by grace alone through faith alone and not by works.

Obedience to God is both evidence and confirmation of the life-transforming power of the Holy Spirit. By the grace of God, all believers will progressively grow in Christ-like character, demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit, and practice good works.

  • The Church, Baptism, & Communion

The Church is composed of all those united to Jesus Christ by faith. Christ is both the head of the Church and its supreme authority, and He has commissioned His Church to make disciples of all nations. Along with the ordinances of baptism and communion, he gives spiritual gifts to equip, care for, and build up His Church.

Baptism: Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples and to baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Baptism is to be performed, by immersion in water, only on those who have made a credible profession of faith in Jesus Christ.

Communion: Jesus commanded His disciples to eat the bread and drink the cup as symbols of His body and blood, in order to remember Him and proclaim His death until He comes. Communion, or the Lord’s Supper, is to be taken only by those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ and who repent of their sin and seek to honor Him.

A local church is a congregation of professing believers united by faith, submitting to the word of God, and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges granted to them through Christ. It is led by elders and served by deacons, whose qualifications and duties are defined in the letters to Timothy and Titus.

  • Last Things

Jesus Christ will return at a time known only to God. All mankind will be physically raised from the dead and judged. The unbeliever will be condemned to everlasting punishment in hell. The believer will be rewarded with everlasting joy, living with the Lord forever, in a glorified body, in the new heaven and the new earth.
